Definitions:

Xenohormones/Xenoestrogens: man-made substances that are foreign to the body and have a hormone-like effect. Most have an estrogen like effect. They affect men and women.

Common Problems Related to Xeno-hormones

  • Increased risk of cancers in men and women (breast, uterine, ovarian, prostate, testicular)
  • Increased PMS problems in women
  • Decreased fertility in both sexes
  • Decreased sperm count in males (Florida alligators can't reproduce)
  • Increased incidence of undescended testicles
  • Menopause/Hot flashes
  • Stubborn weight loss

Common Sources of Xeno-hormones

  • Synthetic estrogens are found in oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapies.
  • Chlorine and all cleansers containing chlorine. Drinking water. (Used to kill germs.)
  • ALL American-grown, non-organic livestock, which are fed estrogenic drugs to fatten them. Dairy products, especially pasteurized dairy products which contain Bovine Growth Hormone (BVG)
  • Petrochemically derived pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. These are used on food crops and home gardens and found in flea collars or your pet's flea shampoo.
  • Solvents and adhesives (as in fingernail polish and polish remover, glue, cleaning supplies)
  • Almost all plastics, in manufacture and disposal. When plastics are burned, they release dioxins. Dioxins and furans are released into the environment during the production of chemicals containing chlorine (PVC - polyvinylchloride - one of the most common plastics. It's found in everything from flooring to children's toys.
  • Plasticizers (phthalates, pronounced thalates) compounds added to plastics to make them more flexible. Common products include: car parts, especially dashboards, cling wrap for meat and cheese in the supermarket, synthetic leathers, adhesives, caulking, cosmetics, and as a carrier for insecticides, repellents, and perfumes, found in paper that comes in contact with liquid, fatty and dry foods, baby bottles, linings of tin cans, dental sealants and composite fillings. In 2000 the FDA finally banned phthalates in baby toys.
  • Emulsifiers found in soaps and cosmetics. Laundry detergent and hair products. Look for the word paraben. (ie. methyparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben...)
  • Food preservatives like BHT, BHA, propyl gallate, and 4-hexyresorcinol are known hormone disruptors.
  • Soy - Soy has estrogenic properties. All products made with soy: salad dressings, milks, cheeses. Look for soy or soy protein isolate on the package. (Most packaged prepared foods contain soy as an oil or an isolate.)

NOTE: You can absorb xeno-hormones by ingesting (eating), inhalation, and direct skin contact.

What to do to minimize xeno-hormone exposure.

  • Avoid all synthetic and horse hormones. (Oral contraceptives and conventional HRT).
  • Eat organic meat and dairy, and/or avoid the fat of non-organic meat and dairy (this is where xeno-hormones concentrate.)
  • Decrease or stop all conventional pesticides, lawn and garden chemicals, etc. Don't contract with conventional lawn services that use these sprays; they are extremely toxic and contain lots of xeno-hormones.
  • Buy cosmetics without xeno-hormones (contact www.cosmeticsdatabase.com).
  • Avoid particle board, synthetic fiber carpets and fake woods as much as possible. The chemicals you smell are toxins and xeno-hormones.
  • Don't drink water from plastic bottles. These are notorious for containing xeno-hormones.
  • Decrease use of dry cleaners. If you must use a dry cleaner, hang clothes away from the bedroom for a couple of days to eliminate the dry cleaner smell.
  • Find detergents that do not contain APES (alkyphenol ethoxylates).
  • Avoid perfumes and colognes - use essential oils instead.
  • Avoid all foods that contain soy in any form.

Foods to eat to help balance and even eliminate xeno-hormones*

  • cruciferous vegetables: brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, asparagus & cabbage
  • green leafy vegetables: romaine lettuce, red tip or green tip lettuce, spinach
  • onions and garlic
  • raw nuts & raw seeds
  • avocados, olives and oils
  • organic dairy
  • citrus fruits: oranges, grapefruit, pineapple, papaya, kiwis, apples and berries
  • whole oats and barley grass
  • spices: oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage and turmeric

* If you are trying to lose weight, it is best to be tested for allergies to the above tested foods. Allergies can cause undo stress to the body and keep it from performing the xeno-hormone elimination you are looking for.
